FAQs

Here you can find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. If you don't find the answer you're looking for don't hesitate to email us or telephone us on 0870 458 9197

Q: What is ultrasound?
A: '4D' is shorthand for 'four-dimensional' - the fourth dimension being time...4D ultrasound takes three-dimensional ultrasound images and adds the element of time to the process. The result: Live-action images of your unborn child or of any internal anatomy.

Q: Where can I get a 4D ultrasound scan?
A: The Baby Ultrasound Company - 0870 458 9197. We currently have clinics in London, Birmingham and Manchester with more opening shortly.

Q: Are there risks involved in 4D ultrasound?
A: No. 3D and 4D ultrasound both utilize sound waves to look inside the body. The technology is similar to radar. A probe placed on the body emits sound waves into the body, listens for the return echo and generates an image. There is no evidence to suggest that ultrasound presents any risk to the mother and baby.

Q: How long will an appointment last?
A: You should allow about 45 minutes for the appointment.

Q: What do I need to bring with me?
A: Please bring your hospital/maternity records with you.

Q: Can I have a 4D scan at any stage of pregnancy?
A: Between 22 and 32 weeks is considered the ideal time for a 4D scan. To take a look at our pregnancy timeline click here.

Q: Can I bring the family with me for the scan?
A: There is ample parking space and we are able to accommodate 3 other people within the scanning room as the procedure is taking place.

Q: Do I still need to attend hospital scans?
A: Yes. 4D scanning is not part of your routine antenatal care. The 4D scan shouldn't replace any appointments at your hospital.

Q: Why do 4D ultrasound images have a golden hue?
A: Physicians have the option of selecting different tints in reviewing images. GE has found that the golden hue is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and shows excellent shadows and highlights.

Q: What happens to any report?
A: If requested by you, a copy repot will be formally typed and sent to your GP or maternity unit.

Q: Beyond pretty baby pictures, are there other applications for 4D ultrasound?
A: GE’s model, the Voluson 730, is a full-service ultrasound system that can be used for breast imaging, interventional urology and general imaging. As with all ultrasound systems, it can be used to research the following:

  • Determining foetal age
  • Analysing foetal development
  • Evaluating multiple and/or high risk pregnancies
  • Detecting foetal abnormalities
  • Detecting structural problems with the uterus
  • Detecting placental abnormalities
  • Detecting abnormal bleeding
  • Determining ectopic pregnancy and other abnormalities of pregnancy
  • Detecting ovarian tumours/fibroids
  • Locating the placenta

  • Q: What if an unexpected abnormality is found?
A: Any abnormality found will be explained as fully as possible to you. At your request we will liaise with your GP or maternity unit to pass on this information.

Q: How long before I get my images?
A: Images will be available on the day for you to take away with you. A DVD of moving 4D images and a CD-ROM of still 3D images for you to store on your computer, print as photographs or email to friends and family as a keepsake. All included in the final price.
